Can you Get High from CBD in Ohio?

CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is a chemical compound that is derived from the marijuana plant. Unlike the well-known cannabis compound THC, CBD is considered a non-psychoactive compound. Since CBD is non-psychoactive, it does not produce any intoxicating effects that can result in the user feeling high or stoned. In a study by the World Health Organization, it was concluded that CBD is a non-addictive substance and does not cause the user any harm.

How does CBD work?

The reason that CBD does not get a user high is due to how different cannabinoids interact within the bodies Endocannabinoid system. The primary receptors that respond to CBD are the CB1 and CB2 receptors within the brain and central nervous system. When CBD is consumed, it interacts with the Endocannabinoid system by creating a sedative experience that can reduce anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy and seizures. CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties that can provide relief for those with autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis, and conditions such as arthritis and chronic pain.

Why Purchase Medical Grade CBD

Due to CBD being legal in over 30 states, it’s possible to purchase CBD products by shopping online or at non-dispensary locations. If you can purchase CBD products online, then what is the difference between those products and products from medical marijuana dispensaries? The importance of purchasing CBD from a dispensary is that dispensary products are considered medical grade, their products follow state mandated regulations and undergo strict quality assurance and testing. When you purchase CBD from a dispensary, you should be able to know what percentage of CBD that product contains, as well as any other ingredients that were used. Medical CBD is also grown from a licensed facility and sourced from medical marijuana plants as opposed to industrial grade hemp that is used in non-medical CBD products. Industrial CBD products that are purchased outside of dispensaries can contain toxins, pesticides and other contaminants due to unsanitary processing practices with inadequate quality assurance testing.

Does CBD contain THC?

Due to CBD being derived from the cannabis plant, some CBD products can contain a trace amount of THC, generally below .03% THC. Due to CBD products containing trace amounts of THC, they are referred to as “Low-THC” products. Since CBD products can contain THC, it is possible that using CBD products could show up in a drug test, however, users would have to consume an incredibly high dose of CBD, and even then it would likely produce a false-positive test result due to the amount of THC being very miniscule.

Using CBD Products

There are a variety of ways that you can consume CBD products. Common CBD products include CBD flower strains that can be smoked or vaped, CBD vape cartridges, oils, tinctures and creams. Since you can not overdose on CBD and there are no known negative or intoxicating side-effects, finding the proper dosage consists of trying different doses until you find the calming, sedative effect that you desire. You can also find CBD products at dispensaries that contain a specific ratio of CBD to THC. One common ratio is the 1:1 ratio, where products contain 50% CBD and 50% THC. For users that find that THC alone produces too much of an intoxicating effect, it is recommended that using THC products in conjunction with CBD could help reduce the high or stoned effect produced by THC. Many users of THC will report that when they are too high or experience paranoia or anxiety from consuming too much THC, that ingesting CBD could aid in counteracting those negative effects from THC.

Dr. Rothman is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He has received multiple special awards and recognitions, including Physician of the Year, from the Pinellas County Medical Association (2014 – 2015) and the President’s Service Award from the Pinellas County Medical Society.
