Meet With a Doctor
The State of Florida requires that all patients visit a doctor in person to complete the health evaluation for the first time. We have thirty offices located across Florida. A friendly DocMJ doctor will consult with you and talk about your symptoms, medications, and wellness goals. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how mmj can improve your life.
Get Approved
When approved, you will receive a recommendation for mmj. The physician will upload the recommendation to the Florida Department of Health, OMMU. Recommendations are entered into the registry on the same day. Patients will then recieve an email from the state to apply and pay for the state card. In some cases, patients may be able to purchase mmj the same day following their appointment once the medical card process has been completed. Your medical card will arrive by mail approximately 10-15 days after you have been certified by the doctor and apply to the State.

Florida’s Medical Marijuana History
Florida’s medical marijuana journey started in 2014 with the passage of the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014. This was the first law in the state to allow for low-THC cannabis products for patients with certain medical conditions like cancer, chronic seizures, epilepsy, and muscle spasms. It was a big step forward for the state to offer an alternative treatment for those suffering from serious health issues.
Today, Florida has the largest medical marijuana program in the country, with more than 800,000 patients using cannabis as a treatment for various medical conditions. It’s evolving as new research comes out and as public opinion shifts towards more acceptance of cannabis as a viable and effective treatment.
This is a result of the medical marijuana movement in Florida and the state’s effort to make sure patients have access to this life-changing medicine safely and reliably.
Definition of Medical Marijuana in Florida

Purchasing Medical Marijuana in the State of Florida
Once approved for your Florida medical marijuana card by a certified physician and receiving your card from the State, you can legally purchase medical marijuana from licensed dispensaries. These dispensaries require your information to be submitted to the registry administered by the OMMU by a certified marijuana doctor. You are not required to buy from a specific dispensary, many directories are available to help you find a dispensary near you.
Renewing Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card
In Florida, state-issued medical marijuana cards are valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually. Your required physician certification is valid for 7 months (210 days). To renew your physician certification, schedule a follow-up appointment with your DocMJ medical marijuana physician, who will assess your condition and determine if medical cannabis is still appropriate. After the consultation, your doctor will submit the renewal information to the OMMU’s registry.
You must then submit a renewal application annually and pay the required fee to the State. It's recommended to start the renewal process at least 30 days before your card expires to avoid any interruptions in access.
