Ohio Medical Marijuana: All About Cake Strains
All About Cake Strains
Medical marijuana strains come in all types of flavors, but if you haven’t found one you’re married to yet, the Wedding Cake strain (or its cousins) might be right for you.
The Wedding Cake Strain
In Ohio, two cultivators currently produce a Wedding Cake strain, Gibsonburg’s Standard Wellness and Akron’s Fire Rock line, Woodward Fine Cannabis.
Wedding Cake took home first prize for Best Hybrid Flower at the 2018 SoCal High Times Medical Cannabis Cup, among its latest and most prestigious awards. It also won second prize in the Vape Pen and Cart category in the Oklahoma Cannabis Cup and earned Leafly’s 2019 Strain of the Year award.
This hybrid strain clocks in at about 23-25 percent THC. It’s also known as Pink Cookies, named for its lineage that includes the popular strains Girl Scout Cookies and Cherry Pie. Wedding Cake was created by Seed Junky Genetics and crosses a mother Triangle Kush with Animal Mints pollen. The strain received its moniker due to its sparkling resin and just-baked vanilla cake aroma.
The appearance of Wedding Cake is very similar to the GSC strain with light green to dark green and purple leaves with lots of beautiful THC-containing trichomes encrusting its calyx.
Opening the Jar
While I’ve had this strain from Fire Rock before, I tried Standard Wellness this time. Upon opening the jar, I immediately noticed that the buds were super sticky and very fragrant. It emitted a sweet, citrusy aroma on first whiff. Upon grinding, I noticed you can also smell a distinct hint of cherry.
I was drinking an orange vanilla sparkling water with this and it paired perfectly. The accompanying beverage highlighted the subtle vanilla hints behind those first fruitier notes.
Judging the Effects
I found this strain very calming and relaxing, but focused. It made me want to do creative work. The overall effect felt very chill with a productive head high, with my chronic back pain easing as I started to notice a shift in the effects from head to body.
Medical marijuana patients often choose Wedding Cake to help relieve symptoms associated with pain, insomnia, and appetite loss, according to Leafly. As a hybrid strain, I found that wedding cake does nicely for helping with symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The dominant terpene of limonene helps patients who use it feel uplifted, euphoric, and relaxed, which makes it a great daytime strain.
If you like Wedding Cake as a strain, you might also consider trying some other cake strains:
Ice Cream Cake Strain
This strain is available in Ohio from Akron’s Klutch Cannabis. When it’s time to get some sleep and if you already get good effects from Wedding Cake or other cake strains, you might consider trying Ice Cream Cake.
Ice Cream Cake is a heavy 75 percent indica strain that is a cross between Wedding Cake and Gelato #33. This strain emits a sweet aroma with subtle hints of cookie dough and vanilla. Patients report that the strain gives them a sensation of relaxation and euphoria while helping to alleviate pain and help them fall asleep. Its dominant terpene is limonene, known for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-stress properties.
Blueberry Cheesecake Cake Strain
The Blueberry Cheesecake strain takes this family in the opposite direction from Ice Cream Cake as a sativa. This strain is a 70 percent sativa to 30 percent indica hybrid combination of strains Big Buddha Cheese and Blueberry. The effects tend to be happy, euphoric, uplifting, relaxed, and focused, therefore it probably won’t knock you out like Ice Cream Cake will.
The lineage is interesting, too. The parents are a unique combination that includes Wedding Cake, Skunk, GMO, and TK. Blueberry Cheesecake typically offers users a balanced effect that comes on immediately and can be felt for several hours.
