Pennsylvania’s Medical Marijuana History

In 2016, Pennsylvania took a significant step in healthcare by passing the Medical Marijuana Program. This program allows patients with qualifying medical conditions to have access to medical marijuana as a treatment option. Initially, only patients with severe conditions like cancer, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and severe chronic pain were eligible for medical marijuana but the program has since expanded to include more qualifying conditions.

The PA Department of Health established a regulated system for medical marijuana so only licensed doctors could recommend cannabis treatments. This was a big deal so patients could get care in a safe and regulated environment. Today, the program is evolving with more qualifying conditions being added and more dispensaries opening up across the state so patients have access to medical marijuana.

In 2018, the state started issuing medical marijuana cards to eligible patients so they could have legal access to cannabis products from licensed dispensaries. These cards also protect patients from legal repercussions so they can have peace of mind as they try a treatment that works for them.

If you need medical relief, a medical marijuana evaluation from a licensed doctor is required to apply for a medical marijuana card in PA. With the right doctor’s recommendation, you can get the cannabis products you need while following state guidelines.

Definition of Medical Marijuana in Pennsylvania

In PA, medical marijuana is defined as cannabis or cannabis products from a licensed dispensary or medical marijuana provider. These products are only available to patients with a valid medical marijuana ID card from the PA Department of Health. To be considered “medical marijuana,” cannabis must be purchased through the state’s regulated system. Any marijuana from an unlicensed source (non-licensed seller or provider) is not medical marijuana and can get you in trouble under PA law.

Residency Requirement for Medical Marijuana in PA

To be eligible for a medical marijuana card in PA, you must prove you are a resident of the state. Permanent residents can submit a valid PA state ID, driver’s license, or other state-approved ID.

Temporary or seasonal residents can provide proof of residency by submitting 2 of the following:

  • A lease or rental agreement, deed, or mortgage statement with your name and PA address

  • A utility bill or work order with your name and PA address dated within 60 days

  • Recent mail addressed to you, such as a financial statement (e.g. bank, credit card, or investment account) or communication from a federal, state, or local government agency within 2 months

  • A statement from a parent, guardian, or someone you reside with confirming your PA residency

These documents help to ensure only legal PA residents can access medical marijuana according to PA regulations.

Purchasing Medical Marijuana in the State of Pennsylvania

Once you are approved and have your Pennsylvania medical marijuana card, you are legal to buy medical marijuana but only from state-licensed dispensaries. These dispensaries, also known as Medical Marijuana Dispensaries (MMDs), are located throughout the state and are the only place to get medical cannabis products.

It is important to note that cannabis is only considered “medical marijuana” when purchased through these approved, licensed dispensaries.

To make a purchase your medical marijuana card must be linked to the states registry which is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. This is done by your licensed doctor, who will submit your information to the state to verify you are eligible.

Without this registration, you will not be able to legally purchase cannabis products. While your doctor can recommend the dosage and method of consumption, they do not have to tell you which dispensary to use. To help you find dispensaries, there are online directories that list licensed locations that accept Pennsylvania medical marijuana cards.

Renewing Your Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

In Pennsylvania, your medical marijuana card is valid for 1 year and must be renewed every year. To start the process, schedule an appointment with a licensed doctor who will evaluate your condition, review your treatment, and make sure medical cannabis is still right for you.

The doctor will submit the recommendation to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. You’ll need to submit the renewal application through the state’s online portal, update your information, and pay the renewal fee. Once approved, your new card will be mailed to you. Make sure to start the process at least 30 days before your card expires so you don’t have a gap in medical cannabis access.

Book a Telemedicine Appointment

Pennsylvania residents can schedule a convenient telemedicine appointment with DocMJ. A consultation with a board-certified physician licensed to practice in the state of Pennsylvania is required to apply for a medical marijuana card. Our physicians take the time to answer any questions you may have about the PA medical marijuana program.
