Spooky Strain Names for Halloween
Have you ever wondered how they come up with some interesting names for cannabis strains? We went looking for some spooky strain names for Halloween, that won’t scare you. But instead, they may prompt you to check out and explore new strains for symptom management.
1. Ghost Rider OG
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Indica-dominant)
THC Content: 17%
Cannabinoids: CBG 1%
Terpenes: Humulene
The Marvel Comics superhero “Johnny Blaze” may have inspired the name of this Sativa strain. But if you take some Ghost Rider OG, chances are you won’t be traveling very far. This low THC Indica-dominant strain is known to provide a relaxing and sedative effect.
Ghost Rider OG was bred from the genetics of two famous strains; Biker Kush and The White. People who are a fan of Kush cannabis will recognize the citrusy flavor with earthy undertones.
2. Dark Phantom
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Indica-dominant)
THC Content: 24%
Cannabinoids: CBG 0.36 – 0.68%
Terpenes: Caryophyllene
This strain used to be called Phantom Cookies #5, and you may still find it in medical cannabis dispensaries under that name. Dark Phantom comes from two strains you may recognize; Cherry Pie and Grandaddy Purple. The flavor is dank, with hints of sweet berries and a nutty undertone.
Dark Phantom is a popular choice for patients who have chronic pain because it has a full-body numbing effect. It can also help patients who suffer from insomnia because it can provide a relaxing, happy, and anxiety-relieving cerebral effect.
Why the name? It might have something to do with the loaded trichomes on this cannabis bud, which give it a ghostly appearance.
3. Zombie Kush
Cannabis Type: Indica
THC Content: 21%
Cannabinoids: CBDa 24%
Terpenes: Caryophyllene
It is not surprising that a strain named “Zombie” would be 100% Indica. And if the name is any indication, you’ll know this strain is not likely to put the spring in your step. More likely, you will deepen your personal relationship with your couch and spend some quality time there.
The psychoactive effects of Zombie Kush happen fast. This strain creates a euphoric feeling and an almost immediate sedative effect for some people. It can feel like a strange contradiction because Zombie Kush can elevate your mood. You may feel happy and want to do something fun but lack the energy to do so, thanks to the Indica influence.
So make sure to bring some water and snacks to the couch before you “zombie” out with this strain. Especially snacks, because this strain ranks high on the munchies scale. It is also an excellent choice for patients who suffer from chronic pain and insomnia, thanks to its CBDa content.
4. Monster Cookies
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Indica-dominant)
THC Content: 13% to 21%
Cannabinoids: CBN 1%
Terpenes: Humulene, Linalool, and Pinene
Monster cookies are probably not the spooky strain you want to try if you have a laundry list of things that need to get done on a Saturday. Even though it has a relatively low THC level, monster cookies are bred from girl scout cookies and grandaddy purple. And it packs a surprisingly strong psychoactive and physiological effect.
Some patients who have used monster cookies describe it as a slow creeping high that builds over time. The onset feels like a combination of a body high and cerebral, dreamy sensation. You may feel relaxed but still able to carry on a conversation and socialize well. Until the later part of the psychoactive effects, when you may be tempted to find a comfy couch and have a nap.
5. Pennywise
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Indica-dominant)
THC Content: 12% to 15%
Cannabinoids: CBD 14%
Terpenes: Myrcene and BCP (β-Caryophyllene)
It is apparent what scary character this spooky strain is named after. If you have watched Stephen King’s “IT,” you can compare this strain to experiencing the “deadlights.” For low-THC cannabis, it packs a pretty powerful punch.
With the parent strains of Jack the Ripper and Harlequin (landrace), you can understand the inspiration. Pennywise, cannabis has a 1:1 ratio of THC and CBD. And that makes it a popular choice for patients with PTSD, epilepsy, neuropathy, and other types of inflammation.
Pennywise has more than the potential to help moderate pain symptoms. Some patients use this strain as a nighttime option to reduce stress and anxiety. And it may also help with insomnia by providing a sedate effect on mood.
6. Green Goblin
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Sativa-dominant)
THC Content: 22%
Cannabinoids: CBD 1%
Terpenes: Carene, Myrcene, and Phellandrene
Cultivated from Northern Lights and Skunk #1 strains, Green Goblin flower stands out among bud. It is covered with orange hair and has a strong diesel scent. People who smoke Green Goblin report a subtle mango or papaya flavor.
How did Green Goblin get its name? The strain is zippy (that is our best explanation). While it can provide patients with some relief from anxiety, Green Goblin can be energizing. Consuming Green Goblin could increase your energy level and focus. Kind of like the Green Goblin zipping around on his hoverboard? Norman Osborn would approve.
The phellandrene terpene content is different about the Green Goblin cannabis strain. It is one of the less common terpenes that can have medicinal effects. A 2015 study suggested that phellandrene and limonene could provide antihyperalgesic and antidepressant benefits.
7. Frankenstein
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Indica-dominant)
THC Content: 18% to 22%
Cannabinoids: CBG 1%
Terpenes: Myrcene
You know how Frankenstein’s monster was pieced together? That is kind of like the Frankenstein strain when it comes to horticultural genetics. But it may also be aptly named because the psychoactivity of this strain has been measured (Analytical 360 labs), topping 29%. And some reviews of the strain indicate it can cause vibrant lucid dreams.
If you imagine a bit of a rampage like a classic Frankenstein movie moment, that could be why they named this descendent of Maui Waui and OG Kush. There was some “mad scientist” work behind the scenes to develop Frankenstein, bud. And it has a deep green hue that will remind you of the classic Frankenstein monster.
Some people have reported that smoking too much can contribute to anxiety and feelings of paranoia, which might not make it the best strain to consume on Halloween night unless you plan on staying home and watching a scary movie.
For an Indica dominant strain, some patients report that focus and concentration are not compromised after consuming Frankenstein bud. But this spooky strain can also help with pain relief (without making you feel groggy).
8. The Blood
Cannabis Type: Sativa
THC Content: 23%
Cannabinoids: CBD 0.74 – 0.96%
CBC 0.14 – 0.16%
CBG 0.73 – 0.87%
CBN 0.35 – 0.5%
THCV 0.22 – 0.45%
Terpenes: Humulene and BCP (β-Caryophyllene)
What kind of cannabis would a vampire smoke? The blood, of course! While “the blood” may sound a little macabre and SUS, the strain was named because of its unusual coloration. The leaves and the stems of this spooky strain are bright red.
In fact, the leaves of the blood plants look like veins. Creepy, right? So is the second name this strain goes by. If you find it in a dispensary, it may be called “blood drive.” The vibrant color is also attributed to the blood strain being unusually packed with beneficial terpenes and alternate cannabinoids.
The blood cannabis is very hard to find. The plant is native to Hawaii and is a relative of the legendary Kona gold family. And the seed stock for the blood is protected by the Pua Mana 1st Hawaiian Pakalōlō Seed Bank. An initiative to preserve rare and endangered plant species native to Hawaii. And the blood is categorized as an original landrace strain unique to the island.
The strain is a 100% Sativa variety, meaning patients may experience an energetic but focused cerebral effect. It may help patients moderate symptoms of ADHD, and the blood also has content that may provide anti-inflammatory benefits. It is not recommended for patients who have moderate to severe anxiety.
9. Ghost Train Haze
Cannabis Type: Hybrid (Sativa-dominant)
THC Content: 28%
Cannabinoids: CBD 0.18 – 0.53% and CBG 0.42 – 1.16%
Terpenes: Terpinolene
What is spookier than a Sativa that doesn’t act right? Despite being a Sativa dominant strain, Ghost train haze behaves more like an Indica. But if you are looking for a cannabis strain for chronic pain, it may be a good choice.
Ghost train haze was bred from Ghost OG and Nevil’s Wreck. And the spooky strain is recognized as one of the most potent bud you can buy, topping out at 28% THC. The GTH strain is not recommended for people new to using medicinal cannabis. Or for patients who suffer from moderate to severe anxiety.
For patients who have tried other strains, ghost train haze can relieve ADHD and depression. It has a pleasant citrus and floral flavor. For a Sativa, GTH doesn’t typically enhance energy levels. But it may help with conditions like arthritic pain and inflammation, migraines, muscle spasms, and other types of chronic pain.
Some patients report mild adverse effects from ghost train haze, including cottonmouth (dry mouth) and itchy eyes. Moisturizing eye drops and drinking water before consuming GTH can help offset those effects. Interestingly, the same chemical properties that cause dry eyes can also benefit patients suffering from glaucoma.
