Strain Feature: All About Gorilla Glue #4 (GG4)

strain feature all about gorilla glue #4

The ‘king of the jungle’ remains one of the top-selling cannabis strains for medical use and is revered among cannabis connoisseurs. Gorilla Glue #4, also known as Original Glue, is a strain known for producing high-potency THC batches with a robust terpene profile.

The GG4 strain has won several awards, including Best Hybrid Flower at the 2015 World Cannabis Cup and 2nd place for Best Hybrid Flower at the 2016 Colorado Cannabis Cup. The Indica dominant strain is known for both its pain and stress-relieving qualities, as well as its ability to ease users into a relaxed night’s sleep. For some, it can even be energizing at certain doses.

If you are researching some of the strongest strains of medical cannabis to help with symptom relief, take a few minutes to learn more about the GG4 marijuana strain.

A Sticky Situation Over the Strain Name

gorilla glue

Everyone still calls the famous marijuana strain “Gorilla Glue,” but you will see it in a dispensary labeled as GG1, GG4, or GG5, but not the full name. That is because the original company that cultivated the strain formerly known as “Gorilla Glue” got into a sticky situation over trademark infringement.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office created a policy in 2011 that restricted the ability of cannabis cultivators to register and copyright any strain name. Any product, good, or service that violates the federal Controlled Substances Act is ineligible for trademark protection.

The Gorilla Glue strain became very popular in 2015, and it won many awards, including the High Times Cannabis Cup. The cultivator, Don Peabody, created an LLC called GG Strains. But he was unable to get a federal trademark because his cannabis strain did not meet the USPTO’s lawful use requirements.

The Gorilla Glue Co., which manufactures a well-known brand of adhesive glues, sued GG Strains for both infringing on their name and diluting the original Gorilla Glue trademark. Gorilla Glue is a household name. Not the strain but the adhesive.

The two companies settled out of court with no fines or penalties. However, GG Strains LLC (based out of Las Vegas, Nevada) was forced to change the name of their original strain and subsequent hybrid strains they developed. And they had to hand over their gorillaglue4.com website to the Gorilla Glue Co.

In an interview with Ganjapreneur, Ross Johnson, the founder of GG Strains, stated that the rebranding activities required to settle the case cost the company over $250,000. The parent strains had to be legally renamed as GG1, GG4, and GG5, with no use of the term “Gorilla Glue” on packing or through print and online marketing.

How Was GG4 Developed?

When it comes to marijuana strain origin stories, GG4 has a great one. Around 2011, a legendary cultivator named Joesy Whales had a small accident in a grow room. He accidentally pollinated a Chem Sis (Northern Lights and Chemdawg) female plant with a Sour Dubb. The Sour Dubb strain is a phenotype of Sour Diesel.

The plants that were cultivated from those seeds emerged with four distinct phenotypes by crossing chem’s sister. The fourth one was found to be extra special and interesting, with ‘highly’ attractive characteristics. That phenotype became known as Gorilla Glue #4 or GG4.

Why did they call it Gorilla Glue? Well, the accepted story is the resin from the first batch of Original Glue was so sticky it caused the receiver of a telephone to stick to Joesy’s hand. And much like the adhesive commercials for Gorilla Glue (that showed the same effect with household glue), the name stuck. This part of the origin story didn’t help the trademark infringement case much.

Joesy Whales was credited as the co-founding cultivator of GG4, along with Don Peabody. When you learn more about the unique attributes of GG4, you will understand why this strain became so popular and why it is still a favorite for medical cannabis patients.

GG4 is popular not only in the United States but in every country where cannabis is legalized. And the gorilla glue seeds (feminized seeds) are widely available in states that allow home cultivation.

International Award-Winning Strain

When you learn more about the effects of GG4, you’ll understand why this strain has earned awards in the United States and other countries. It is a perennial favorite for experienced cannabis users because it can provide strong physical and psychoactive effects.

Some of the awards that GG4 has won include:

  • 2014 (1st Place) Jamaica World Cup

  • 2014 (1st Place) Michigan Medical Cannabis Cup

  • 2014 (1st Place) LA Top 10 Hybrid

  • 2014 (1st Place) LA Medical Cannabis Cup

  • 2015 (1st Place) Best Hybrid Strain Hempcon Cup

  • 2015 (1st Place) Patient’s Choice Award

  • 2015 (1st Place) World Cannabis Cup

  • 2018 (1st Place) Spannabis Cannabis Championship Cup

The GG4 strain is so popular that you are likely to find it in any medical dispensary that you visit. As well as other hybrids of the legendary strain, including GG1 and GG5.

The Potency of Gorilla Glue

Gorilla Glue #4’s THC Potency is typically around 18%-25% THC, but in some cases, strain samples have provided up to 32% THC potency. It is not recommended for people who have a low THC tolerance or patients new to using medical cannabis.

The lineage of this sticky strain includes Chem Sis (Chem Sister), Chocolate Diesel, and Sour Dubb. It is 63% Indica and 37% Sativa. The Indica dominant hybrid offers a high potency but also most of the attributes of a strong Indica strain. Therefore, GG4 has a reputation for causing sedation. It can put you to sleep fast or give you a bad case of couch lock.

The Appearance of the GG4 Flower and Bud

People who love comparing different cannabis strains are often enamored with the appearance of GG4. The buds of this popular strain have a vivid green color with plentiful white trichomes. The bud is also covered in orange hairs or pistils and is spongy, resinous, and dense to the touch.

Because the sticky strain can be hard to break up using a cannabis grinder, many people prepare GG4 with trimming scissors instead. The highly sought strain has no shortage of positive reviews based on the appearance of the buds. It is unusually pretty to look at.

Scent and Flavor Profile

Gorilla Glue #4 is pungent and skunky and gives off hints of pine and other woodsy, earthy notes, making patients feel like they have been caught in the middle of a forest. In addition, you can find notes of chocolate and coffee as well.

Users should expect piney, sweet and earthy flavors from this strain. Its Sour Dubbs side provides a sour apple taste, while Chocolate Diesel adds hints of chocolate gasoline.

Terpene Content

The most dominant terpene of Gorilla Glue #4 is usually caryophyllene. Additionally, the strain also has a decent amount of myrcene and limonene. Myrcene can cause sedation and decrease the desire to move. Beta-caryophyllene acts as an analgesic (pain reliever) for many people.

Cannabinoids in GG4

Gorilla Glue 4 has low cannabigerol (CBG) content but no cannabidiol (CBD) content. This is another reason why this strain provides a heavy-handed euphoria. Strains with good CBD content help moderate some of the effects of THC.

Without cannabidiol (CBD) content, GG4 is a full-force Indica dominant hybrid strain with heavy effects. However, some patients who experience moderate to severe chronic pain may combine GG4 flower with hemp flower to increase the CBD content. That may help reduce some of the sedative effects of the strain while increasing potential anti-inflammatory effects.

Common Psychoactive and Physical Effects

The Indica dominant hybrid, unsurprisingly, delivers heavy-handed euphoria. Gorilla Glue 4 is a potent hybrid strain. Typically it is used by patients during evenings or on weekends when there is no other intention but to stay at home and relax.

Some of the positive psychoactive and physical effects of GG4 can include:

  • Anxiety relief.

  • Relaxation.

  • Creativity (before drowsiness sets in).

  • Appetite stimulation.

Some of the adverse effects that you may experience using GG4 include:

  • Dry eyes.

  • Dry mouth (cottonmouth) symptoms.

  • Paranoia (at higher levels of consumption).

  • Increased anxiety (at higher levels of consumption).

  • A bad case of the “munchies.”

If it is a Netflix and chill kind of evening, and you are experiencing unpleasant symptoms like anxiety or pain, GG4 may be the ideal strain of medical cannabis for your needs. However, if you typically use lower-potency cannabis strains, start with a very small amount. This strain has a reputation for couch-locking people who are not regular cannabis users. Gorilla glue marijuana may hit harder than you expect, so proceed with caution.

Medical Uses

Gorilla Glue #4 has gained its reputation for aiding those seeking relief from conditions like muscle spasms. The high THC content of this strain makes it useful for those hoping to manage conditions such as chronic pain, insomnia, stress relief, depression, and loss of appetite.

Its CBD and CBN content is relatively low, which means it is not the best option for patients looking to help with things like chronic inflammation, seizures, and nervous disorders.

If you are having an issue with your sleeping pattern, a higher dose of THC is likely to help your chance of falling asleep quickly. The high THC you will get from Gorilla Glue #4 will cause your body to relax, which should result in a better quality of sleep. Just remember, like any other strain, if you use too much GG#4, there could be adverse effects.

How To Find It

If you have your medical card and you are looking for a local dispensary that carries GG4, simply check websites like Weedmaps or Leafly for more information. Once you set your location on the website, search for the strain, and you’ll be directed to dispensaries near you that offer the strain.

Smokable flower is not your only option, however. By searching for Gorilla Glue or GG4 on websites, you can also browse other products made from the strain. That can include vape, gummies, and tinctures.
