Using These Strains May Result in a Laughing Fit in Ohio

Medical marijuana usage is becoming more common as time goes on and the range of use cases is only growing. You have probably heard the phrase “laughter is the best medicine” and how certain strains of marijuana can turn even the most stoic among us red in the face. Some have sought to combine these thoughts, even going so far as to create marijuana-friendly comedy clubs in some parts of Canada. In this blog post, we will investigate the link between marijuana, laugher, and health.

Is Laughing an Exercise?

The thought that laughter can do more for your body than meets the eye is not new and has been around for decades. One important milestone in this theory was the publication of Anatomy of an Illness (as Perceived by the Patient) in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1976 [1]. Some may also recognize this as the name of a book published in 1979, it follows a patient that has been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. The patient then describes a noticeable improvement in his health after checking into a hotel where he was able to eat good food and watch funny movies, the opposite of his life in the hospital.

Since then, people have sought to use the healing power of laughter in many ways. Laughter yoga and laughter therapy have both become commonly accepted ways of releasing stress, healing the body, and improving mental health. Research corroborates this, with benefits being found in many fields including geriatrics, oncology, and psychiatry [2]. It is thought that laughter causes these benefits by increasing blood flow and decreasing stress hormones while releasing endorphins, making you feel good. The American Heart Association even recommends it as part of their healthy habits.

Why Does Marijuana Make Me Laugh?

Marijuana and laughing is seemingly a match made in heaven, but how? First, we will consider why we laugh in the first place. The reason, evolutionarily speaking, for the existence of laughter is still hotly debated, but we do know what the physical process of laughter entails.

It starts in the brain, when we see something we think is funny, the brain starts up many different processes using many different structures. These include the frontal lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, and more (nearly every part of the brain seems to be used in some way). This also marks where marijuana me begin to make its mark.

Marijuana alters the blood flow to certain regions of the brain [3], some of which have been linked to laughter and humor, which may result in more activity and thus higher excitability. Marijuana also may cause its users to almost “dissociate” from themselves when high, resulting in an altered perception, which can change the way we see even mundane tasks.

Which Strains are Best for Causing Laughter?

Laughing Buddha: Laughing Buddha is a very high-THC sativa strain with a citrus-central taste which produces a relaxed high. It also hits hard and fast, so care may be needed when using this for the first time. Its ability to elevate the mood of its users has helped Laughing Buddha find a use for those with depression and ADD. It may also help those who have general anxiety feel more at home in crowds, very useful for those with anxiety at a late-night show.

Blue Diesel: Blue Diesel is another high-THC strain, and a hybrid of the famous Blueberry and Diesel strains. Blue Diesel carries the berry scent of its parent and the strength indicative of its THC content. Users have reported feeling euphoric after using this strain, leading to its uses for those with ADD and ADHD. It also seems to lack the burnout of some other heavy-hitters, resulting in a more pleasant “come down”.

OG Kush: One of the most famous marijuana strains, OG Kush is another strain high THC content, usually around twenty to twenty-five percent. It’s yellow-tinted leaves are almost as well-known as its strong, earthy smell. The high produced from OG Kush is generally described as “heady and euphoric”, though lacking the headrush some strains produce. OG Kush is able to relax the user, proving to be a strain used heavily in social settings.

Chemdawg: Another famous strain, Chemdawg is a strain of nearly unknown origin. A hybrid strain, celebrated for its energetic and euphoric high, grinding the plant is recommended due to thick coverage of sticky trichomes, seemingly indicative of its strength. Although some users feel as though they have heightened senses after use,  careful dosing is strongly recommended when using this strain, as it hits very strongly. If too much is consumed, paranoia and other side effects are common.

In Conclusion

There is no doubt that laughter can have a variety of beneficial effects on the body, including reducing stress, releasing endorphins, and even improving mental health. Marijuana can make it easier to laugh due to its ability to increase blood flow to those areas of the brain responsible for laughter. The mood change and shift in perspective due to marijuana may also make a difference. If you are looking for specific strains to make you laugh, consider high-THC varieties, but be careful with dosing and know your personal limits.
