How Do You Apply for a West Virginia Medical Cannabis Card?

All patients can apply for a medical cannabis card if they suffer from one or more qualifying health conditions. Patients under the age of eighteen (18) years need a caregiver or legal guardian to register with them.

According to the West Virginia Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC), this is the procedure for getting your medical card:

  • Schedule an appointment with a registered physician.
  • When the marijuana doctor approves you, you will receive your Physician’s Certification for Qualified Patients form. This is required before you may apply for your West Virginia medical marijuana card.

You must apply for your medical card in the OMC registration portal. Click ‘Register’ in the top right of the portal to create your patient profile, complete your registration, and pay for your West Virginia medical marijuana card.

What is the minimum age requirement for medical cannabis patients in West Virginia?

Anyone can apply for a West Virginia medical cannabis card if they suffer from one or more qualifying health conditions. Patients under the age of eighteen (18) years need a caregiver or legal guardian to register with them.

What kind of identification do I need to provide?

To have your West Virginia medical card issued, you must provide a few pieces of information and a photo. Here is what you will need:

  • A digital photo (similar to a passport picture).
  • Government-issued photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
  • Proof of residency in West Virginia (utility bill, voter registration, or similar).

If you request a financial hardship waiver of the registration fee, you must provide proof of income or eligibility for support benefits at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

How long does it take to get a West Virginia medical marijuana card?

Patients can expect to receive an email notification 30-60 days after paying the registration fee and applying for a medical card. If there are any errors in the application, the OMC will ask patients to resubmit their application. There is no need to create a new patient profile, simply update your application and resubmit it through the patient portal.

Is CBD legal in West Virginia?

West Virginia currently permits hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) products with 0.3% or less THC content. There is no restriction on how much CBD patients can legally possess.

How often do I have to renew my West Virginia medical card?

The medical marijuana card in West Virginia must be renewed every twelve months (once per year) for the patient to purchase or possess medical cannabis legally. Patients using medical cannabis for temporary symptoms and health conditions can request a shorter duration.

How much does a West Virginia medical marijuana card cost?
